THE MISSION
To replant the mangrove forest
in the Munje area that has been lost due to economic and environmental factors while immersing the community in sustainable alternative forms of income for the community that protects the mangrove forest.
Funzi Island, located along the Kenyan coast, has witnessed the gradual disappearance of its once-thriving mangrove forest.
The Munje Tunusuru Women's Group was formed in response to this environmental challenge. There are 30 women in the group, and these dedicated women have taken it upon themselves to restore the mangroves, creating a sustainable future for their community.

Key targets
The mangroves of Munje form part of the Vanga-Funzi complex (7,638 ha) within the larger Kwale county mangrove block (8,354 ha translating to about 13% of the national mangrove area). The National mangrove management plan estimate that 3,559 ha (46%) of the Vanga-Funzi system is in need of rehabilitation.

Partnerships
Cordio East Africa supported the women with a range of activities - from establishing beehives in the area for beekeeping to providing capacity building and educational programs to the women and the community.
Beach Management Unit
The BMU has engaged with local fishermen, women, and community members to promote sustainable fishing practices, monitor fishing activities, and provide training and support for fishermen’s cooperatives. They also coordinate the protection of the mangrove forests in collaboration with the communities.
KWS, a state organization undertakes conservation and management of wildlife resources across all protected areas systems in collaboration with stakeholders. KWS in collaboration with others encourages biodiversity conservation by communities living on land essential to wildlife, such as wildlife corridors and dispersal lands outside parks and reserves.
The Kenya Fisheries Service is a body corporate established under the Fisheries Management and Development Act No. 35 of 2016. The purpose of the Service is to Conserve, Manage and Develop Kenya Fisheries and Aquaculture Resources
The local mineral sands producer has bought large amounts of seedlings from the women and provided assistance with transplanting the seedlings.

The Conservation Education Society partners with Munje Tunusuru Wome to set up nurseries, educate them about local tree species, and provides educational programs on marine and wildlife conservation for community schools.

Vilinder Umita is a management consulting company whose vision is to restore and protect ecosystems while empowering local communities, particularly women and youth, to be agents of change in their environments and societies.
They have provided the women with protective gear including boots to wade in the mangrove waters. They also provide potting bags for the seedling nursery.
